Streetcars are a newly-developing mode of public transportation that operate along a fixed rail guideway embedded within the surface of a roadway.  While similar to Light Rail Vehicles (LRV’s) they differ in their smaller size, are less expensive, and operate together with existing automobile and pedestrian traffic in shared rights-of-way.  Passengers board directly from the street or curbside with ADA (American with Disabilities Act) compliant platform bridging plates for wheel chair access.  Electric power is provided from an overhead electric line (catenary) to the streetcar’s trolley arm or pantograph.
